Bona Drag compiled his early solo singles and B-sides and added a new song, "Piccadilly Palare". The title is Polari for a nice outfit. It was produced by Stephen Street, Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. It reached number nine in Britain and 59 in the United States, and went silver in Britain and gold in the United States. Pitchfork gave it 9.8.
After Viva Hate he released a run of stand-alone singles. "The Last of the Famous International Playboys" reached number six, and "Interesting Drug" was held up in March 1989 by an injunction from Stephen Street over a financial dispute. It came out in April and reached number nine. Morrissey then worked with Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" reached number 18 in November 1989, and "November Spawned a Monster" reached number 12 in April 1990. A full second album under the title Bona Drag was begun at Hook End, then dropped for a compilation. Morrissey told NME that people would view it suspiciously in England but not in the rest of the world, where the singles had never been released.
The six solo singles to that point are all here, including "Suedehead" and "Everyday Is Like Sunday" from Viva Hate, and seven B-sides. They gave Morrissey his first songs on the American Modern Rock Tracks chart: "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" and "Piccadilly Palare" both reached number two. The sleeve photograph is an edited still from the "November Spawned a Monster" video. A twentieth anniversary reissue on Major Minor on 4 October 2010 added six unreleased recordings and reached number 67 in Britain.
