Recorded at Utopia Studios in Primrose Hill in February 1992 and the Wool Hall in March, it was the first record with the band of Alain Whyte, Boz Boorer, Gary Day and Spencer Cobrin. Mick Ronson produced every track except "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday", which Mark Nevin produced. Whyte wrote the music for most songs, and Nevin wrote two. The album moved from indie pop to rock, with rockabilly and glam influences.
It reached number four in Britain and 21 in the United States, sold about 360,000 copies there and was nominated for a Grammy for best alternative music album. Robert Christgau gave it an A minus and called it the most consistent solo set to date, and AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it his finest solo record. In a 2013 Uncut interview Morrissey said it sounded too much like Waitrose and needed to be more Harrods. A 2014 reissue added a 1991 concert filmed at the Shoreline Amphitheatre.
Songs such as "Certain People I Know", "Glamorous Glue" and "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" draw on T. Rex and on David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust period. Bowie later covered that song on his 1993 album Black Tie White Noise. Entertainment Weekly's Bill Wyman wrote that Whyte provided the melodic, sometimes rockabilly-inflected settings Morrissey demands, and Erlewine said it rocked harder than any other Morrissey record. It appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
