It came out a week before the album and was his first release for RCA after he left EMI. The sleeve shows the football coach Terry Venables, who was born in Dagenham, sticking out his tongue. It reached number 26 in Britain. Mark Savage, formerly of Grange Hill, played Dave in the video. The B-sides were "Nobody Loves Us" and, on CD, "You Must Please Remember".

NME was harsh and called Morrissey the embarrassing incontinent grandfather of Britpop. AllMusic's Ned Raggett called it the least distinct song on the album. Simon Goddard, in his book Mozipedia, called it a mettlesome pop cartoon with the greatest utterance of the word "pie" by any singer in recorded history.
