Morrissey and the guitarist Jesse Tobias wrote it, and Morrissey said it showed the marked difference in sound that Tobias brought. Billboard called it a simple, effective first single. It reached number three in Britain and the top ten in Denmark, Finland, Ireland and Sweden.

The lyric opens with a reference to Pier Paolo Pasolini and his 1961 film Accattone, set in the slums of Rome, and also names Anna Magnani and Luchino Visconti. The UK CD singles carried the B-sides "Good Looking Man About Town", a cover of "Human Being" by David Johansen and Johnny Thunders, and "I Knew I Was Next".
