Written by Morrissey and Alain Whyte and produced by Jerry Finn, it was the first single from the comeback album, released by Attack in April 2004. The B-sides were "It's Hard to Walk Tall When You're Small", "Munich Air Disaster 1958" and "The Never Played Symphonies".
The lyric speaks as the son of Irish immigrants in England and is described as the most unambiguously political song he has made. He first mentioned it in a 1999 interview. He said it touches his disgust with the British political system, and he criticised Radio 1 for under-playing it.
It reached number three in Britain, number four in Sweden and number seven in Canada. An edited version appeared in the video game EA Sports FIFA Football 2005.
