Mudhoney recorded the album in October 1994 at The Ranch in Seattle with Jack Endino. Turner said the band decided, in the face of grunge falling out of fashion, to record a grunge record with Endino anyway. It was released by Reprise on 28 March 1995. Generation Spokesmodel came out as a single in Britain in May 1995, and Judgement, Rage, Retribution and Thyme went to US alternative radio in June. The hidden track is most of the album played backwards, and a 2003 reissue added bonus tracks.
Peters said the title came from a remark by Bloodloss saxophonist Renestair E.J. in a drive-through. The album reached 70 in the UK, 68 in Australia and 19 on the US Heatseekers chart. Trouser Press, noting it was largely ignored by a waning public, said it fulfilled the promise made way back when, and praised Arm's shriek on Execution Style and the closing 1995, which has a free-jazz saxophone line. In 2020 the album was included in the box set Real Low Vibe: Reprise Recordings 1992-1998.
