The first Mudhoney record of any length was made at Reciprocal Recording with Jack Endino producing, engineering and mixing, and Sub Pop released it in October 1988 as catalog number SP21. It is an EP, though Steve Turner considers it the band's first official studio album. The cover is a Charles Peterson photograph of Mark Arm and Turner on stage. Drummer Dan Peters recalled that after they handed over Touch Me I'm Sick, 24 and You Got It, the next thing they knew they were recording an EP.

The songs came together quickly. No One Has was first called The Wipers Song, and In 'n' Out of Grace was The Blue Cheer Song, a homage to Blue Cheer's debut album Vincebus Eruptum. Arm described Chain That Door as a kind of homage to Feedtime, while Turner said it was influenced by the Meat Puppets' Split Myself in Two. By Her Own Hand, which went on the first album, was among the earliest songs Arm and Turner worked on, playing their electric guitars without amps.

In 1990 the EP was reissued with early singles as Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles, adding Touch Me I'm Sick, Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More, Hate the Police, Burn It Clean, You Got It (Keep It Outta My Face) and a cover of Sonic Youth's Halloween. Sub Pop's 2008 deluxe edition added demos and live recordings from Berlin on 10 October 1988 and KCSB-FM in Santa Barbara on 16 November 1988.

Pavitt recalled that it went to the top of the NME indie charts and stayed there, and in mid-2008 the reissue reached 25 on the UK Indie Album Chart. Marc Masters of Pitchfork wrote that the EP was almost as popular as the debut single and certainly as good. The 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book calls it sexy, smart, humorous and hard.
