Mudhoney's first record for Reprise was made at Egg in July 1992, produced by Conrad Uno and the band. They spent $15,000, completed it in one stretch rather than in scattered weeks, and had full artistic freedom from the label. Four tracks were left for each member to use as he saw fit, which produced the untitled interludes and the instrumental Youth Body Expression Explosion. The band used an organ on many of the songs. Lukin was satisfied with it, the first Mudhoney album he was. Turner said Reprise were hands-off and fine with the untitled tracks.

The album peaked at 189 on the Billboard 200, and the band toured North America to promote it. Suck You Dry was the lead single, with Blinding Sun following. The Washington Post wrote that Mudhoney was too noisy, too punchy and too contrary to curl up and die, and Trouser Press found the fire in Ritzville heartening. The Rocky Mountain News listed it sixth best album of 1992, and Spin placed it among its 20 best records of the year.
