Ecstasy came out on 23 November 1987 on Lazy, in a limited edition of 3,000 LP copies distributed by Rough Trade. It was the second record to feature Bilinda Butcher and the band's last for the label. It reached number 12 on the UK indie albums chart. The Strawberry Wine single had come out on 9 November 1987.

The band recorded it over ten days. All seven tracks were written by Kevin Shields, with Colm Ó Cíosóig co-writing The Things I Miss, Clair and (Please) Lose Yourself in Me. The engineer Steve Nunn mislaid the source of the final mix before mastering, and Lazy would not put in more money to fix it. Clair is built around a tape loop of audience screams from The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl, and Nick Brown plays violin on it. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian put (Please) Lose Yourself in Me at 20 in his 2023 ranking of the band's songs and heard the band inching towards their later blurred sound.

In 1989 Lazy combined the mini album with Strawberry Wine as Ecstasy and Wine without the band's consent. Shields later retrieved 10,000 copies of the compilation from the label's manager and sold them to distributors to pay for later recording sessions.
