Glider was released in April 1990 and reached number two on the UK indie chart. It was the band's first release on Sire in the United States, and they toured in the summer of 1990 to support it. Shields and Alan McGee had agreed to put out an EP ahead of the album because the sessions were taking so long. Shields and the engineer Harold Burgon spent three weeks at Woodcray in Berkshire working on it, and Alan Moulder mixed Soon at Trident 2 in Victoria. An alternate mix of Soon later closed Loveless.

Shields produced and mixed Soon, Glider and Off Your Face, while Ó Cíosóig produced and mixed Don't Ask Why. Butcher has a writing credit on Off Your Face, which Alexis Petridis ranked 11th in his 2023 list of the band's songs, noting that it is uncharacteristically driven by acoustic guitar. Andrew Weatherall remixed the EP for a second 12-inch. Mark Richardson of Pitchfork wrote in 2012 that the EP showed a massive shift in sound from anything the band had done before.
