Shields wrote Soon, the first track on Glider, which was released on 23 April 1990 with Glider on the B-side. He and the engineer Harold Burgon spent three weeks at Woodcray in Berkshire on the EP, and Alan Moulder mixed the song at Trident 2 in Victoria. An alternate mix of 6:58 closes Loveless. The song is built on a dance-oriented, deliberately sampled sound and uses Shields's glide guitar. Shields said he had been hearing music by hip-hop groups that sampled, in which people messed with the key, and in which you could not tell what was making some of the sounds.
It entered the UK singles chart on 5 May 1990 at number 41 and stayed for three weeks. Alexis Petridis ranked it third in his 2023 list of the band's songs, writing that its rhythm was funkier than the era's standard-issue baggy breakbeat and its structure cyclical and hypnotic, and he added that it had an incredible Andrew Weatherall remix. Ken Andrews of Failure has cited it as an influence. At the band's Aviva Studios show in Manchester in November 2025, Shields dedicated it to the late Stone Roses bassist Mani, and the power failed, then failed again when the band played it a second time.
