Brotherhood was recorded in 1986 at Jam in London, Windmill Lane in Dublin and Amazon in Liverpool, and released by Factory Records on 29 September 1986. Bizarre Love Triangle was released as a single on 3 November 1986. Morris said the record was made in a schizophrenic mood, trying to do one side with synthesizers and one with guitars, and that in retrospect this did not quite work. Peter Saville's sleeve is a photograph of a sheet of titanium-zinc alloy.
It peaked at number nine on the UK albums chart. Pitchfork's Tom Ewing described New Order at their most wickedly ramshackle, sounding for the first time since Movement like an indie band, but a superb one. A Definitive Edition appeared on 22 November 2024.
