Recorded in 1982 at Britannia Row Studios in Islington and produced by New Order, the album came out on Factory Records on 2 May 1983. Michael Johnson engineered. Its cover reproduces Henri Fantin-Latour's painting A Basket of Roses, which Saville found on a postcard at the National Gallery, with the band name and title carried by his colour code. It was one of ten covers on the Royal Mail album stamps issued in January 2010, and the Museum of Modern Art added it to its collection in 2014.

Blue Monday appears only on some cassette and CD editions, together with The Beach. Rolling Stone's Steve Pond wrote in 1983 that it was a remarkable declaration of independence and a quantum leap over Movement. Rolling Stone ranked it 94th among the albums of the 1980s in 1989, NME put it 216th on its 2013 list of the 500 greatest albums, and Pitchfork ranked it 28th among the best albums of the 1980s. A Definitive Edition followed on 2 October 2020.
