Substance compiled the band's singles up to that point in their 12-inch versions, and the double CD added their B-sides. It included the new True Faith and its B-side 1963, plus fresh recordings of Temptation and Confusion made for the set. It sold over one million copies and went platinum in the UK, the US and Canada. It reached number three in Britain and 36 on the US Billboard 200.
Robert Christgau, writing in The Village Voice, called it a pure rhythm machine with an ironically mysterious overlay of schlocky melody, and a case study in sensationalist art. Rolling Stone listed it at 361 in 2003 and 363 in 2012. The length shown is for the vinyl edition.
