Time of No Reply gathers outtakes and alternative versions. The first four tracks are outtakes from the November and December 1968 sessions for Five Leaves Left. The last four tracks, Rider on the Wheel, Black Eyed Dog, Hanging on a Star and Voice from a Mountain, are the so-called final four recordings of February 1973, which had first appeared as bonus tracks on the 1979 box Fruit Tree. The album was also the fourth disc of the 1987 version of that box. Been Smoking Too Long was written by Robin Frederick.
