Stratus is two self-playing, semi-generative pianos triggered by a central piano that Arnalds plays. Halldór Eldjárn wrote the software, which took two years. Each note Arnalds plays makes Stratus generate two different notes, so unexpected harmonies and melodic sequences appear. Strings came from the London Recording Orchestra, and the singer SOHN is on Unfold.
Torsten Posselt of FELD studios made the cover artwork from the same MIDI signals as the music. In the title track each dot stands for a piano note: 88 fields for 88 notes, with thicker dots for notes played more often. The album reached number 48 in the UK and number one on the Swedish classical chart. String quartet and choir versions followed in 2019.
