Slow Buildings was released by 4AD in August 1994 and was the only album made after Ian Masters left. Colleen Browne played bass and sang, and Meriel Barham took over the lead vocals. Hugh Jones produced and engineered every track but Song of Solomon, which Mark Freegard handled at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool. The rest was recorded at Palladium Studios in Edinburgh and mixed at Master Rock and Maison Rouge.
Barham, Browne, Cooper and Naysmith wrote the songs, with additional writing on Fine Friend by Jamie Watson. Caroline Lavelle played cello, Simon Clarke flute and Roddy Lorimer trumpet, and Jones added strings to Henry and piano to Suggestion. The album reached number 25 on the US CMJ chart. Fine Friend was the single, and Henry, One Blue Hill and Angel (Will You Be My) went to radio only.
