Three songs were demoed before Date arrived ("A New Level", "Regular People (Conceit)" and "No Good (Attack the Radical)"); the rest were written in the studio with little preproduction. Howie Weinberg mastered it, with vinyl mastering by Doug Sax. Its singles were "Mouth for War" (September 21, 1992) and "Walk" (February 15, 1993). The band toured with Skid Row and Soundgarden, in Europe with Megadeth, and in 1992 with White Zombie.
AllMusic's Steve Huey gave it four and a half stars and called it one of the most influential heavy metal albums of the 1990s. Rolling Stone ranked it tenth on its 2017 list of the 100 greatest metal albums, and Loudwire named it the number one metal album of the 1990s. It is certified double platinum in the United States, and the 20th anniversary edition of May 15, 2012 added "Piss", which Vinnie Paul found in old recordings, and a DVD of six songs from Monsters of Rock in Reggio Emilia in 1992.
