Non-Alignment Pact was recorded in January 1977 at Cleveland Recording Company, with Ken Hamann engineering, together with Heaven. The band then chose The Modern Dance as the A-side of the August 1977 Hearpen single instead, and Non-Alignment Pact waited for the album, where it is the first track.
Guitar.com described the first seconds as a piercing, confrontational ringing noise and a riff straight out of the primordial thrashings of rock 'n' roll, before a vocal from Thomas that is "deeply hooky and very, very odd". Brian Coney of The Quietus wrote of Ravenstine's "ear-splitting intro" and the "mutated Chuck Berry boogie" that follows. A Record Collector feature grouped it with Final Solution and All the Dogs Are Barking among the early songs of existential angst.
