C'est La Vie is Phosphorescent's seventh studio album, released on Dead Oceans on 5 October 2018. Houck announced it on 30 July 2018 with the first single, New Birth in New England. Metacritic gives it 80 from 19 reviews, and Album of the Year gives it 76 from 21.
Pitchfork's Jesse Jarnow noted that it was the first Phosphorescent studio album in a half-decade and the first since Houck left Brooklyn for fatherhood in Nashville. He heard Houck's voice cut through inventive settings and compared it to 1980s Paul Simon. New Birth in New England has Ricky Ray Jackson's pedal steel, My Beautiful Boy is a song about fatherhood, Christmas Down Under has a vocoder, and on Around the Horn Jackson's pedal steel locks into a pulse.
