Kowalski was released in May 1997 as the first single from Vanishing Point and reached number 8 in the UK. It is named after the protagonist of the 1971 film Vanishing Point, and the band intended it as an alternative soundtrack to that film. Gillespie said the film's music was hippy music and that the band wanted something that reflected its mood of paranoia and speed-freak righteousness.

Discogs lists Gary Mounfield as a writer. The Guardian described it as the band's attempt to superimpose their own paranoia, claustrophobia and drug-induced psychosis on the film, with an industrial-strength fuzz bassline, distressed samples and a half-whispered vocal. The writer Irvine Welsh scripted the video, which Douglas Hart directed. It shows a Dodge Challenger and Kate Moss beating up the band, and Gillespie described it as a cross between Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! and The Sweeney.
