Movin' On Up began as a piano-and-vocal ballad rooted in blues and gospel. It turned toward the Rolling Stones after Andrew Innes came up with an intro riff in the style of Bo Diddley, and the band added guitars and a choir to the chorus because Gillespie felt his voice was too soft. Producer Jimmy Miller, who had worked on the Stones' records from Beggars Banquet to Goats Head Soup, finished it. The engineer Colin Leggett quit three days into the sessions, and Gillespie wanted Miller to take over. Miller mixed the track at Eden Studios and played two Coca-Cola bottles as percussion.

Huw Price, the engineer at Jam Studio, recalled that Innes played a heavily compressed acoustic guitar borrowed from a hire company, and that Young played lead on Price's own 1963 Stratocaster. Gillespie said that Miller was the one person in the world he wanted to mix them. Tom Ewing wrote in Pitchfork that on this song Primal Scream sound like a rock group having the time of their lives.

It was released as a single in the US in late 1991. In the UK it led the Dixie-Narco EP, which Creation released on 27 January 1992 and which reached number 11. In the US the song reached number 2 on Billboard's Modern Rock airplay chart. The upload in the hypersongs web is the official video from the band's VEVO channel.
