Rocks was released in March 1994 as the first single from Give Out But Don't Give Up. It reached number 7 in the UK, then the band's highest chart position, and The Guardian later described it as the biggest radio hit of their career. NME was unimpressed and called the band dance traitors.

Tom Ewing of Freaky Trigger ranked it number 97 in his 1999 list of the top 100 singles of the 1990s, while admitting that he had first disliked it. He recalled that friends reacted to it with disappointment, mockery or a sense of betrayal, because Primal Scream had been the band that showed indie fans a way into dance music. Discogs credits David Bianco and George Drakoulias as co-producers.
