Amnesiac came from the same sessions as Kid A. Radiohead thought the material too dense for a double album, and Yorke said the two records "cancel each other out as overall finished things". The strings, arranged by Jonny Greenwood, were played by the Orchestra of St John's at Dorchester Abbey. The band said they saw it as an album in its own right and not a set of Kid A leftovers.
Several tracks have stories of their own. Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box runs Yorke's vocals through Auto-Tune. Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors began as an attempt to record True Love Waits. You and Whose Army? aimed for the sound of the Ink Spots, with the microphones muffled in egg boxes. Knives Out took over a year to finish, and Dollars and Cents was cut down from an eleven-minute jam. Like Spinning Plates grew from a reversed recording of I Will. On Life in a Glasshouse the trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band played in a seven-hour session.
Amnesiac entered at number one in Britain and number two on the Billboard 200, and had sold more than 900,000 copies worldwide by October 2008. Pyramid Song and Knives Out were the singles, and I Might Be Wrong was a promotional single. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, and its special edition won the Grammy for Best Recording Package. The Guardian placed Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box at number 36 in a ranking of Radiohead's 40 best songs.
