Radiohead began demos in early 1996 at Chipping Norton Recording Studios and then worked in Canned Applause, a converted shed near Didcot. In September 1996 they moved to St Catherine's Court, a mansion near Bath owned by the actress Jane Seymour. The vocals on Exit Music (For a Film) were recorded on a stone staircase and Let Down was recorded in a ballroom at 3 am. O'Brien estimated that 80 per cent of the album was recorded live. The strings were recorded at Abbey Road in January 1997, and the album was completed on 6 March 1997 and mastered by Chris Blair.
Exit Music (For a Film) was written for Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, and Lucky was recorded in five hours on 4 September 1995 for War Child's The Help Album. Singles were Paranoid Android, Karma Police, Lucky and No Surprises. Capitol cut its sales forecast from two million to half a million, but the album went to number one in Britain with 136,000 copies in its first week, entered the Billboard 200 at number 21 and has sold at least 7.8 million copies worldwide. It was certified five-times platinum in the UK in August 2013 and double platinum in the US. At the 1998 Grammys it was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Alternative Music Album. The Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry in 2014. The remastered OKNOTOK 1997 2017 appeared in 2017 and MiniDiscs [Hacked] in 2019.
