The band played the songs live in the studio. Marc Waterman left before the end, worn down by long days and late nights, and Alan Moulder, who went on to work on Loveless, took over and mixed it. Bell called the Roland GP-16 effects unit a third arm for both guitarists. Bell said the band were driven to improve on the songwriting, playing and production of their first two EPs. The cover is a photograph of an uncrested wave by the surf and skate photographer Warren Bolster.
It reached 11 and went silver. Melody Maker called it breathtaking, Select gave it five stars, and AllMusic's Andy Kellman called it the band's zenith; Pitchfork later gave it 9.5. The CD added the rest of the Fall EP, including Taste. A 20th anniversary edition added Today Forever and a live disc from the Roxy in Los Angeles, and Nowhere25 (2015) came with a film of the band at the Town & Country Club in 1991.
