Siren was released on 24 October 1975 by Island, and by Atco in the US. It produced the singles Love Is the Drug and Both Ends Burning, which reached numbers 2 and 25 in the UK. Love Is the Drug reached number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's highest-charting single in the US. Chris Thomas produced it, Steve Nye engineered it, and John Gustafson played bass. Ferry wrote every song. Mackay co-wrote Love Is the Drug and Sentimental Fool, Manzanera co-wrote Whirlwind and Nightingale, and Jobson co-wrote She Sells.
The cover shows Jerry Hall on rocks near South Stack on Anglesey. Graham Hughes photographed her in August 1975 from sketches by Antony Price. The location was Ferry's idea after he saw a television documentary about lava flows and rock formations on Anglesey.
Allan Jones called it a superb album in Melody Maker, and Simon Frith in Rolling Stone noted less synthesized clutter and more straight solo trading. Christgau ranked it eleventh on his 1975 year-end list. Dave Marsh called it Roxy's masterpiece in 1983, and Rob Sheffield in The New Rolling Stone Album Guide called it the first Roxy Music album without any failed moments. Simon Reynolds, writing in Uncut in 1999, found it and Country Life conventional and tame beside the band's earlier output. Rolling Stone placed it at number 371 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums. Pitchfork's Tom Ewing called its closing song, Just Another High, one of the great career-ending statements.
