Pierre Marchand, who had helped with Wainwright's demos, recorded, mixed and produced most of Poses. Alex Gifford of the Propellerheads produced and co-wrote Shadows, Ethan Johns produced California, Damian LeGassick produced The Tower of Learning and Greg Wells produced the bonus track Across the Universe. Wainwright wanted a pop record that showed he could get up from behind the piano. It took about a year and a half to record, half as long as the debut.

Wainwright said the album grew thematically from its title track, which came out of his stay at the Chelsea Hotel, where he thought of the parties as a series of poses. Teddy Thompson and Martha Wainwright sing on One Man Guy. Grey Gardens and The Consort are among its other songs.

Poses debuted at 117 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top Heatseekers chart. It won Outstanding Music Album at the 2002 GLAAD Media Awards and the Juno for Best Alternative Album, and was certified gold in Canada. Pitchfork scored it 8.6 and praised the title track's aching melody and spartan piano backing.
