Paczosa recorded and mixed it at Minutia Studios in Nashville and produced it with Jarosz, their third collaboration; Eric Boulanger mastered it at The Mastering Lab in Ojai. Jarosz played with Alex Hargreaves on violin and Nathaniel Smith on cello, and Viktor Krauss on bass, with guests including Darrell Scott, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, Aoife O'Donovan and Kate Rusby. She told Folk Alley she wanted the trio to be a big part of the sound, and credited her four years at the New England Conservatory for the jazz and classical elements: I think it took the full four years for that to infiltrate my musicality.

It reached number 101 on the Billboard 200 and number six on the Folk and Americana charts. It earned Grammy nominations for Best Folk Album and, for the title track, Best American Roots Song, at the 56th ceremony, and an Americana Honors Album of the Year nomination in 2014. The New York Times's Jon Pareles praised her growth, and the Boston Globe's James Reed found it more organic and complex.
