Say She She

A Brooklyn vocal trio of Piya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown, whose self-described discodelic soul runs from the 2022 album Prism through Silver (2023) to Cut and Rewind (2025).

Three voices

Say She She are Piya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown, all classically trained vocalists. Wikipedia says Malik and Cunningham met as neighbors in the same Manhattan building in 2017, and Grammy.com that they began casually writing songs together on the Lower East Side in 2018; Wikipedia gives 2021 as the year the group formed, with Brown joining at a Harlem house-party singing session. Malik had sung with El Michels Affair and Chicano Batman, and Brown and Malik had both belonged to the Brooklyn group 79.5. Cunningham says the name is a silent nod to Nile Rodgers and Chic. They call their sound discodelic soul, and on records and on stage they are backed by members of Orgone: Dan Hastie on keys, Sam Halterman on drums, Dale Jennings on bass and Sergio Rios on guitar.

Their debut single, "Forget Me Not", came out on February 8, 2022, coupled in March with "Blow My Mind", and the album Prism followed on September 23 on Karma Chief and Colemine. In February 2023 they made their first television appearance on CBS Saturday Morning, where Nile Rodgers sent a surprise video message; they then played four sets at Glastonbury in 48 hours, opened for Portugal. The Man at the Hollywood Bowl and for Thee Sacred Souls at Brooklyn Steel, and recorded Live at KEXP (May 2023) and a BBC Maida Vale version of "Slippery People" (2024).

Records

Prism, largely produced and mixed remotely in lockdown, grew from old tape stems made with Joey Crispiano that had been meant as demos; the Guardian's Alexis Petridis gave it five stars in December 2022 and called it a delightful place to visit for half an hour. Silver (September 29, 2023, Karma Chief) was written in a Los Angeles camp at the start of 2023 with the members working in the same room and most lyrics written on the spot, and recorded live to tape at Killion Sound in North Hollywood; one retailer's listing credits Sergio Rios as producer. It scored 81 on Metacritic, four stars from AllMusic and 9 out of 10 from God Is in the TV, reached number 61 on the Scottish albums chart and was KCRW's best album of 2023. Cut and Rewind (October 3, 2025, drink sum wtr) was written in the breaks between members' session work for others, and its "Disco Life" addresses Disco Demolition Night in 1979. Their 2026 single "Pawa!" is with Asha Puthli, and the Cut and Rewind tour was their first major headline tour.
