Climate of Hunter reached number 60 in the UK. Walker signed to Virgin in 1979 and wrote the album's songs between August and September 1983, then recorded them in two months, October to December, with Peter Walsh. Guests included the saxophonist Evan Parker, Mark Knopfler on Blanket Roll Blues, and Billy Ocean on harmony vocals. Brian Gascoigne wrote the orchestral arrangements.

The musicians were asked to record their parts without knowing the melody. Four tracks have no titles, only Track Three, Track Five, Track Six and Track Seven. Walker told the television show The Tube that titles might lopside or overload the songs. The lyric sheet bolds the first line of each, which gave them the informal names Delayed, It's a Starving, Say It and Stump of a Drowner. Blanket Roll Blues, the closing track, has words by Tennessee Williams from the 1959 film The Fugitive Kind.

NME ranked it number 5 among the albums of 1984. Writing in 2006, The Guardian called it an enigmatic and frequently magical record. A remastered edition appeared on 30 January 2006 with notes by Bob Stanley.
