Pretty Polly
A traditional song Collins took down from Ollie Gilbert in Arkansas in 1959 and recorded again for Lodestar.
Shirley Collins, from Lodestar (2016)
"Pretty Polly" is track six on Lodestar. Collins has said she recorded it herself from the singing of Mrs. Ollie Gilbert in 1959, on the field trip with Alan Lomax, and that it remained a favorite of hers for over fifty-five years and is found throughout England and the US. Gilbert's husband Oscar was a fiddler and moonshine maker, and Collins sat with the women while Lomax talked to him; she calls Ollie a good singer in true Ozark mountain style. Its subject, per a Stereogum summary, is a girl who disguises herself as a man to follow an army captain, the family of songs called Polly Oliver. It is not the Kinks song "Polly" or the murder ballad "Pretty Polly".
Layla Atkinson directed the video, published on October 27, 2016, and Collins's one stipulation was a JigDoll, a wooden dancing doll. The album launched at the Union Music Store in Lewes on November 4, 2016 with the Brighton Morris Men, and at Rough Trade East on November 7. No setlist.fm page for her was found, and no covers or samples were researched.
