Butch Vig produced again, with John Siket engineering, and the album was recorded in late 1993 at Sear Sound on 2-inch 16-track tape. The band claimed that they taped over the masters of Sister to make it. Sweet Shine ends with a hidden track at 6:25. The record reached number 34 in the US, their best until The Eternal reached number 18, and number 10 in the UK. The single Bull in the Heather reached number 24 in the UK and number 13 on the US Modern Rock chart. About 246,000 copies had sold in the US by 2005. Rolling Stone gave it four stars out of five and Pitchfork 6.8. Many of its songs were never played live, because Gordon's pregnancy meant there was no full tour behind it.
