Recording started in August 2001 at Echo Canyon, and the album takes its name from the studio's address, 47 Murray Street, within a block of the former World Trade Center. The attacks of 11 September halted the sessions while the band led a benefit festival on 9 October. By their All Tomorrow's Parties set in Los Angeles on 17 March 2002 recording and mixing were complete. It is the first album with Jim O'Rourke as an official member.

The cover shows Coco Gordon-Moore picking strawberries with her friend Stella. It peaked at number 126 on the Billboard 200 but won wide acclaim, with a Metacritic score of 82 and Album of the Month at Mojo. Pitchfork's Rob Mitchum called it the band's first successful convergence of envelope-pushing guitar work and accessible songs since 1988. The Wire named it record of the year for 2002, and Pitchfork later placed it 108th among the 200 best albums of the 2000s.
