The cover is a painting from Richard Prince's Nurse Paintings series, and one of his works in that series is called Dude Ranch Nurse, which is also a song title here. Pattern Recognition is based on William Gibson's 2003 novel. Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream first appeared as Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream, and the title was changed over fears of legal action from Carey's representatives.
Pitchfork's review said the album was less an expansion of form than a return to it, with the late-1980s atmospherics given a crystalline production. Christgau gave it an A minus and called it unusually songful. The Wire ranked it second in its critics' poll, while Spin gave it 5 out of 10. Metacritic scored it 77.
