The Diamond Sea

Nearly twenty minutes of guitars and a slow crescendo to close Washing Machine.
Sonic Youth, from Washing Machine (1995)

Album
Washing Machine

At 19:35 it is the longest Sonic Youth studio track apart from their SYR releases, with Moore on vocals. Medialoper describes its shape as shimmering guitars, a verse from Moore, three rounds of verse and chorus, a long instrumental crescendo, and then a final verse and chorus. An edited version was released as a single on 30 October 1995, and it did not do well commercially.

The band played it on the Late Show with David Letterman on 22 September 1995. Spin's Erik Davis called it a gorgeous tapestry buried in the album's uneven load, while NME called it probably the band's best song.
