An acoustic version appears on Just Roll Tape, his April 1968 demos. Uncut's Rob Hughes said that rough take was as complete as the 1971 album version. Stills said the song was about growing up in the South and attending debutante balls, while Graham Nash liked to call it the Crosby, Stills & Nash theme song, "which I suppose it is".

Jerry Garcia plays the pedal steel guitar throughout. He recalled being flown to Miami for a week to record it, working at the weirdest hours. Released as the debut single from the album, it reached No. 43 on the Billboard chart in the week of July 24, 1971 and spent nine weeks there. Paste called it a "catchy pop hit", while Cash Box described it as a production showcase.
