Stills took the title line from Billy Preston, who said it often: if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with. In 1991 Stills recalled asking Preston if he could use it and getting a yes. He called the result a good times song and said his favorite part was the steel drums, which he played himself alongside organ, guitar and percussion.
The track was cut in London in the summer of 1970. Back in Los Angeles, Graham Nash and David Crosby sang the choruses at Wally Heider's, joined by Rita Coolidge, Priscilla Jones and John Sebastian. Fuzzy Samuel played bass and Jeff Whittaker congas. It was first performed in concert on May 12, 1970, on the Déjà Vu tour. Released in November 1970 as the lead single, it peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Cash Box praised its "unique melodic work, the harmonies and a booming rhythm track".
The Isley Brothers recorded it in 1971 for Givin' It Back, taking it to No. 3 on the R&B chart and No. 18 pop. Bucks Fizz reached No. 47 in the UK with it in 1986, and Luther Vandross's version on Songs (1994) earned a Grammy nomination. In Prometheus (2012), Idris Elba's character sings a phrase of it.
