Styx II was recorded at Paragon Studios in Chicago in 1972 and 1973, produced by John Ryan with Bill Traut as executive producer and Marty Feldman and Barry Mraz engineering. DeYoung sang and played keyboards, Young sang and played guitars, Curulewski sang and played guitars and keyboards, Chuck Panozzo played bass and John Panozzo drums. It was the first album on which Curulewski wrote and sang two songs, and the second side opens with Bach's Little Fugue in G, an instrumental of 1:17.
It was reissued in 1980 as Lady with new artwork, charted at number 20 in 1975 and went gold. AllMusic's Lindsay Planer gave it three stars, and the Rolling Stone Album Guide one. DeYoung told Backstage Axxess in 2010 that he wrote five of its seven songs, believes it should have been the first album, and dislikes the early Wooden Nickel records.
