The band moved on from Buller and, after demoing 15 songs with three different producers, chose Steve Osborne, who had worked with Happy Mondays. Anderson called it Suede's most experimental album and credited Osborne with a lot of its sound. Osman described it as groovier than earlier records, and the band said they had not set out to make a dance album. Recording ran from August 1998 to February 1999.
It is the first Suede album with a title track. Elephant Man, written by Codling, is the only song on a Suede album not written or co-written by Anderson. Anderson said the album drew on Asian Dub Foundation, Audioweb, Tricky, Prince and Lee Perry. Singles were Electricity, She's in Fashion, Everything Will Flow and Can't Get Enough. Head Music went to number one in the UK, the band's third and last chart-topper. Peter Saville and Nick Knight made the cover.
