Anderson wrote the lyrics in a flat in Highgate. He later said the record was made in reaction to Britpop and that no record could be less Britpop. Sessions at Master Rock ran from late March to late July 1994 with Buller producing and engineering. Butler often recorded separately and left before the album was finished, so some parts were completed by others. Butler can be heard tuning a TV at the start of The Asphalt World and changing channels at its end. The track runs 9:25 on the album and was edited from a much longer recording. Buller recalled Butler playing the intro to The Wild Ones on a dobro while sitting on the roof of a car outside the studio.
The orchestra on Still Life was a 40-piece Sinfonia of London, arranged and conducted by Brian Gascoigne. Anderson said the closing orchestral coda was conceived with the whole album's journey in mind. The sleeve photograph is by Joanne Leonard. Anderson said the title was about ambition, and about what a person could make of themselves. Singles were We Are the Pigs, The Wild Ones and New Generation.
Alexis Petridis of the Guardian called Still Life a suitably overblown finale to an overblown album. Pitchfork in 2011 called the record a thrilling one and said Daddy's Speeding ends in a torrent of static and sampled engine noises. Matthew Lindsay of The Quietus wrote that it would end up as the band's masterpiece. In the US it was released by Columbia on 25 October as the work of the London Suede. In the UK it entered at number three, fell to 12 the next week, and went gold in November 1994. Sales reached 235,000 in the UK by August 1996. The 2011 expanded edition restored longer versions of The Wild Ones and The Asphalt World. A 20th anniversary box set followed in October 2014.
