With Richard Oakes on guitar and Neil Codling on keyboards, Suede made a record that Anderson wanted to be the opposite of Dog Man Star. He said he wanted a straightforward pop album, just ten hits. Buller stayed on as producer, and T. Rex's 1972 album The Slider became the blueprint for the recording. Buller's aim was to make The Slider for the Nineties. The band spent a month at The Town House working only on drums, and every track began with acoustic guitar, bongos, tambourine and Anderson. Dave Bascombe mixed most of the songs, and it was his idea to speed up the vocals on Trash.

The album went to number one in the UK, was certified platinum in January 1997 and had sold 425,000 copies there by July 1997. It also reached number one in Sweden and Denmark. Five singles came out of it: Trash, Beautiful Ones, Saturday Night, Lazy and Filmstar. The US release came in April 1997 after a short tour, during which equipment was stolen in Boston following a sold-out show on 17 May.

James Delingpole of the Daily Telegraph called it Suede's Ziggy Stardust. Pitchfork in 2011 called it about the most day-glo rock record this side of Ziggy Stardust, and noted an intentionally garish Peter Saville sleeve to match. The band toured the album again in the UK in November 2021 for its 25th anniversary.
