The debut single came out on Nude in May 1992 and reached number 49 on the UK chart. It built up airplay over time, and two videos were made, one for the UK and one for the US. NME and Melody Maker both named it single of the year. NME placed it at 104 in its 2014 list of the 500 greatest songs.
Pitchfork in 2011 pointed to the opening drum stomp, soon joined by Butler's crunching, metallic riff, as the moment the band announced themselves as something different. It arrived when British rock was dominated by shoegaze and Madchester. Flying Saucer Attack covered it. The American band Drowners took their name from it.
