Released on 29 July 1996, Trash was the first Suede single written without Butler. It reached number three in the UK, tying Stay Together as their highest-charting single there, and outsold it. It topped the chart in Finland and reached the top five in Denmark, Iceland and Sweden. Dave Bascombe's idea to speed up the vocals was key to the sound.

Anderson said he wrote it about the band, as a celebration of Suede and of the fans too, even though it sounds like a love song. NME put the band on its cover on 27 July 1996, and Melody Maker ranked the song fourth among its singles of the year. The video was shot at Elstree Studios, directed by David Mould, and was the first to feature Neil Codling. Paste ranked it 14th in its 2014 list of the 50 best Britpop songs.

A version with re-recorded vocals and an alternative ending appears on the 2003 compilation Singles. The single's B-sides were collected on Sci-Fi Lullabies, and one of them, Europe Is Our Playground, marked the songwriting debut of Mat Osman. Apoptygma Berzerk recorded a cover on their album Rocket Science.
