Anderson wrote it in Highgate. He said it was about revolution and the gap between the middle-class streets there and the council estates of nearby Archway, and that it was meant as a warning to the middle classes. It came out on 12 September 1994 and reached number 18 in the UK and 34 in Sweden. Horns on the track recall the theme from Peter Gunn.

Sony wanted New Generation to be the first single, but Anderson insisted on this one. Mat Osman felt The Wild Ones should have been first and called the choice commercial suicide. The band played it on Top of the Pops on 22 September 1994, Richard Oakes' first television appearance with them. The video, directed by David and Raphael Vital-Durand, was banned at first by some TV stations, including MTV, for violence. It was also Oakes' first official public appearance.

Pitchfork ranked it number 169 in its list of the top 200 tracks of the 1990s, and NME placed it at number 364 in its 2014 list of the 500 greatest songs. Total Guitar put Butler's solo at 57 in its list of the 100 hottest solos. The B-side, Killing of a Flash Boy, became a staple of the band's live sets.
