Mwng means mane. The band had written several Welsh-language songs while working on Guerrilla and decided to issue them together as a record rather than as token B-sides. Rhys reasoned that if their English pop songs were not being played on the radio, they might as well make a Welsh-language album that would not be played either. He described it as a stand against globalisation, even if indirectly. Two songs are not Super Furry Animals originals: Y Teimlad is a cover of a 1984 song by Datblygu, and Dacw Hi, which Rhys wrote in 1987, is credited to Ffa Coffi Pawb, the band he and Ieuan had played in.

It was recorded over two weeks in late 1999, mostly live, for 6,000 pounds, a reaction to the long sessions for Guerrilla and Radiator. Nythod Cacwn is the original demo, with Rhys on drums. Creation's collapse delayed the release from March to 15 May 2000, and the band put it out on their own Placid Casual label. It reached number 11 and was the first Welsh-language album to reach the top 20. It was reissued by Domino in 2015, and in 2026 the band played it in full at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Metacritic gives it 84. NME ranked it ninth among 2000's albums and called it the group's best record, and Melody Maker placed it 24th. Pitchfork's Marc Hogan, in 2005, praised its sinuous pop melodies and organic arrangements, and picked the single Ysbeidiau Heulog as the standout. The Guardian reported in 2025 that it remains the biggest-selling Welsh-language album of all time.
