Super Furry Animals recorded their debut at Rockfield Studios in Wales and released it on Creation in May 1996. Four singles came from it: Hometown Unicorn, God! Show Me Magic, Something 4 the Weekend and If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You. It peaked at number 23 on the UK Albums Chart.

Rhys told Uncut in 2008 that the band had signed a deal and were somewhat blagging it, and that they wanted Rockfield for the jacuzzis and the three meals a day. They had conceived the record as a reaction to Britpop, which they felt was a conservative, backward movement in music, but they soon realised they were in an old 1970s studio making a 1970s rock album. Rhys Ifans and Dic Ben left the answerphone message that plays as Long Gone ends.

On the original 1996 UK album the faster song Something for the Weekend sat third. The US release replaced it with the slower single version, Something 4 the Weekend.

NME's Simon Williams wrote in 1996 that debut albums rarely come as multi-layered or lovingly manipulated. Rolling Stone's Jon Wiederhorn found it rich in hallucinogenic spirit and shimmering guitars. Melody Maker named it the third best album of 1996 and NME the fourth. Q put it at number 42 in its 2004 list of the 50 best British albums, and NME placed it at 245 in its 2013 list of the 500 greatest albums. Pitchfork's Marc Hogan, reviewing the 2005 reissues, said it introduced the band's candy-factory chameleon act, and thought the second half less consistent. Rod Stanley, in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, felt the band would make better albums but found this one joyful and exciting. The band played it in full on their December 2016 tour.
