Radiator was released by Creation in August 1997 and, later that year, in the United States on Flydaddy Records. It peaked at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart. It came out four days after Oasis's Be Here Now.
Rhys described it as more interesting than the debut, with the band using Gorwel Owen's Atari computers and banks of old vintage synths to make something musically much more adventurous. It was the first time they worked with the artist Pete Fowler, who painted the album sleeve and the singles that went with it. The band felt Fowler gave them a distinct visual identity, and he designed the sleeves of their releases until Hey Venus! in 2007.
Q placed Radiator at number 73 in its 2000 list of the 100 greatest British albums. Pitchfork's Marc Hogan wrote that on it the band began to master the art of the album, and that many would rank it as their finest. The band played it in full on their December 2016 tour.
