The Chemical Brothers

Released on 8 September 2023 through Virgin in the UK and Republic Records in the US, it was the duo's first album in four years and their first released by Republic, every earlier American release having come through Astralwerks. The track list was announced on 19 July 2023. Tom Rowlands produced, programmed, mixed and engineered, Ed Simons produced and programmed, Steve Dub mixed and engineered, and Mike Marsh mastered. Rowlands sings on Fountains and Skipping Like a Stone, Halo Maud sings on the first, second and last tracks, and Beck sings on Skipping Like a Stone.

Speaking to Rolling Stone UK, Rowlands said the pair wanted to speak very directly through music, and Simons said the album was made during the first lockdown, a strange time. Rowlands recalled looking back at a demo numbered 512 from 2 March 2021. He said the Beck song did not feel complete until they heard him sing on it, and that the first song they sent Halo Maud was Live Again, so she could re-sing the demo. Her voice on the opening and closing tracks was meant to give the record a circular feel. Rowlands said it felt more like a continuation of No Geography.

Metacritic gave it 81 out of 100 from nine reviews. Uncut wrote that they produce a whole lot of full-fat dance-pop joy, and The Observer's Damien Morris called it a nonsense-free reaffirmation of the duo's greatest strength. Rolling Stone UK's Will Richards wrote that rather than reinventing themselves they simply keep the wheels rolling, and chose No Reason as an irresistibly funky house track. Rolling Stone UK gave it its Album Award. The record was nominated for the Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Nicholas Krushenick is credited with the artwork.
