Released in the UK on 26 June 1995 by Junior Boy's Own, Freestyle Dust and Virgin, and in the US by Astralwerks that August. It was recorded between August and November 1994 in South London, edited at Berwick Street and mastered at The Exchange by Mike Marsh, with Steve Dub engineering. Rowlands said in 2002 that they stayed up for three weeks making it. The title refers to their departure from the name the Dust Brothers, and the first six tracks run together as a medley that includes Leave Home, Chemical Beats and a live recording of Song to the Siren made at the Sabresonic nightclub in March 1994. Leave Home first appeared on NME Xmas Dust Up, a cassette given away with NME in Christmas 1994.

Tim Burgess sings on Life Is Sweet and Beth Orton on Alive Alone. Samples include Kraftwerk's Ohm Sweet Ohm at the start of Leave Home and the Beastie Boys' The Maestro on In Dust We Trust. Ed Simons said the cover came from a 1970s fashion shoot reject box. The album entered the UK chart at number 9, its highest position, and stayed in the charts in every year from 1995 to 2000. NME called it brash, raw, rule-bending gear made by open-minded music fans, for open-minded music fans. Muzik named it the second best dance album of all time in 2002, and it appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
